How we carry out research

Our approach

Our studies may combine surveys, interviews, process mapping, document review, observation and analysis of publicly available or administrative information.

What we aim to do

• begin with specific experiences rather than general assumptions;
• distinguish observed patterns from interpretation;
• test plausible explanations before drawing conclusions;
• identify limitations in the available evidence;
• report findings in aggregate where appropriate;
• separate self-initiated research from commissioned work transparently.

Methods vary by study

Methods will vary by study. Each published study should describe its research question, data sources, collection period, sample limitations and analytical approach.

Representativeness

The Signal Board does not claim that voluntary survey samples are necessarily representative of an entire population unless the research design supports that conclusion.

Study-specific methods

Each study may use a different combination of methods depending on the question being investigated. Where findings are published, the study page or report will explain the methods used and any important limitations.
